Escape Sparrowlock’s horrors

Monstrum 2 is an action video game wherein you must escape a sea fortress while a horrifying monster hunts you down. Developed by Team Junkfish, this 3D survival horror game is the sequel to Monstrum and is an asymmetrical online multiplayer that lets you both do co-op and versus mode

Similar to games like Dead by Daylight and Resident Evil Resistance, Monstrum 2 features 4v1 multiplayer and allows you to either play as an escaping human or one of the many monstrosities with unique abilities. However, this has various major differences to the first game and comes with a boatload of issues.

Will Monstrum 2 have single-player?

Monstrum is a 2015 survival horror and action video game that lets you try to survive against dangerous creatures in a roguelike setting. Played in first-person and entering procedurally-generated maps, your pursuers are AI-driven monsters with different behaviors whom you must use varying strategies against. However, while this core concept was retained in the sequel, it completely replaces the AI with real players—making this a multiplayer-only game.

In Monstrum 2, you get another procedurally-generated labyrinth full of puzzles and traps, and you’re up against a monster, too. However, this time, you can play as them, as well. It features 4-versus-1 multiplayer and essentially allows 2 - 5 players in one match. As a prisoner, you have to solve puzzles around to unlock your exit and then try to survive until you reach it.

Meanwhile, you can choose from the different monsters to play as them and hunt down every prisoner to win. Unfortunately, the lack of an AI to fight against—whether human or monster—actually makes this a bit of a downgrade to what made Monstrum shine so well in the first place. It doesn’t help that the waiting time for matchmaking can be tediously long.

Could use some old features

All in all, Monstrum 2 has a nice concept on its own in the series, but against other 4v1 games, it tends to pale in comparison. It doesn’t offer a solo mode against an AI like in the first game and the match queues tend to be pretty long. It’s fun enough with friends but if you’re specifically here for the Monstrum concept, it’s best to just play the first game.
